Hackers Can Now Steal Privacy from Your Selfies! Find Out How!

Lots of us is fond of taking selfies and one of our favorite post is a peace signs. Most people are aware they shouldn’t post sensitive and personally identifying information on social media, such as a letter with their address or a plane ticket, as they could be used by scammers. And they most certainly wouldn’t publicly share their passwords.

You should always be aware while posting a sensitive picture on social media sites. The researchers have disclosed that a sensitive picture can reveal your personal identification and private data. They have experimented that a photo with peace sign can reveal your fingerprint data and used by the hackers.

Researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Informatics (NII) have found that fingerprints can be easily recreated from photos taken up to three meters away without the need for advanced technology. So long as the picture is clear and well-lit, prints can be mimicked.

All the potential hacker requires is a digital camera and the fingertips to be well-lit and in focus. The researchers say the peace sign makes is easy for hackers to match fingerprints to faces, posing a security threat to phones, laptops, bank accounts and buildings.

In an interview with local newspaper Sankei Shimbun, the security and digital media researcher of NII, Professor Isao Echizen said that showing a peace sign while taking a picture can make the hackers rebuilt your fingerprint.

Robert Capps, from Biometrics Company NuData Security, said that we leave our physical biometric information like a fingerprint on the whole thing we stroke, post pictures on social media websites and also in some videos along with our friends and relatives.

This biometric information can be taken and retail in the Dark Web and will be used by the hackers to get into user’s accounts and can reveal your identification. Unlike passwords, biometrics cannot be easily changed, prompting fears over the safety of people’s personal data.

Japanese government officials last year launched a new system that enables visitors to pay in shops with a touch of the fingertips, after registering their credit card and fingerprints details.
